Lost your cat? Here's what to do

Practical missing-cat guidance for owners across the UK

When a cat does not come home, it can be worrying. Start with a careful search close to home, let the right people know and share accurate information so neighbours and local animal welfare services can help.

What to do when your cat goes missing

  1. Search close to home first. Check quiet hiding places in your home and garden, and ask neighbours to look in sheds, garages, outbuildings and greenhouses. A frightened cat may hide silently.
  2. Contact your cat's microchip database. Report your cat missing and check that your phone number and email address are up to date.
  3. Contact nearby veterinary practices and rescue centres. Share a recent photograph and description in case your cat is brought in or reported.
  4. Speak to neighbours and local groups. Give them a clear description and ask them to check enclosed spaces before locking them up.
  5. Create a missing-cat report. Include a clear photo, colour, coat pattern, distinctive markings, collar details, last-seen area and date.
  6. Keep information current. Update your report if your cat is sighted, and let everyone know when your cat is safely home.
Helpful detail: Include the exact pattern and colour of your cat's coat, eye colour if distinctive, approximate size and any unique markings. Do not publish your full home address or other private information.

Report your missing cat with ALFIK

ALFIK helps people share lost and found animal reports across the UK. Publish your cat's photograph, description, last-seen area and date, then search community reports for possible matches. A suggested match is only a lead to check, not a confirmed identification.
